There was a prophetic voice preparing people for what was going to be a time of financial woes and lack of basic substance. His name was Agabus, an unusual name to say the least but one that had significance. You see in the ancient Hebrew culture peoples first name had real significance, the name was supposed to identify his of her purpose for being or to identify them with a calling. Agabus was a New Testament prophet who warned the people. Agabus means "No Locust". i.e. he was there for one reason to prepare the people so they could avoid the consequences of famine.

"One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)" Acts 11:28

Project Agabus is a contemporary prophetic ministry whose mission is to both warn and prepare people to what is obviously coming about in the world today. Living simplistically, living within our means, bringing positive solutions to a system that is being compromised by the greed of man and the desire to control just about every aspect of our lives.

Commodities: Unforgiving market for the ill-prepared

US forecasts protracted bout of high food prices

The world faces a protracted bout of extremely high food prices, the US government has warned, overwhelming farmers' ability to cool commodity markets by planting millions of additional hectares with crops.

Corn soars as US inventory forecasts drop

Corn surged above $7 a bushel, the highest since the peak of the 2007-08 food crisis, after the US government said inventories of the staple would this year fall to match their lowest level on record.

According to The Market Oracle, the United States Department of Agriculture artificially keeps food prices down by using inflationary numbers in production estimates to keep supply and demand figures in balance. In other words, the government is cooking the books! However, if you look at other data the USDA puts out, it brings our national food production plight into a whole new light.

One such publication is the USDA's Disaster Designation Areas. In order to be included in this designation, a county must have suffered a minimum 30% loss in one crop to be declared a disaster area.

A sampling of the USDA's Disaster Designation Areas for this past year includes:

• The whole states of Alabama and Arkansas

• 58 out of 77 counties in Oklahoma

• 70 of 83 counties in Michigan

• 151 out of 159 counties in Georgia

• 63 out of 100 counties in North Carolina

And this is just a small sample of the entire map. The figures are quite staggering.

When you add into this the increased overseas demand for food supplies (China, Thailand and Japan for example), the need for corn for ethanol requirements in the United States, and farmers decreasing production of crops that are financially unappealing (wheat is one such financial loser in the marketplace), then the stage is set for soaring food prices.

For example:

• In 1981 the United States had 88 million acres planted in wheat.

• 2010 saw a reduction in wheat acreage to 47.6 million acres planted in wheat and wheat production down by 25%. Our national wheat stores are down by 10% and now Australia's floods have shut down key grain ports, underpinning global concerns of tight grain supplies and rising food costs.

• Barley stores are down by 35% and corn stores are down by 12%.

Conversely:

• Dairy and vegetable oil prices have risen by over 40% this past year

• Wheat prices saw a 47% increase

• Corn prices have risen 50%

• Soybean prices are 34% higher

• The United Nations is forecasting food prices rising by an additional 40% this year.
